The Time and Day of the Locksmith Service

In general, you don’t pay as much when you call on the services of a locksmith during normal working hours. Calling a locksmith for help on a weekday afternoon, for example, will entail minimal costs.

That’s not the case when you call on emergency services from a locksmith at odd hours. When it’s late at night or very early in the morning, the locksmith cost can rise significantly. This is also true when you call the locksmith over the weekend or on a special holiday. Getting a locksmith on Christmas, for example, can be very expensive.

Of course, you can’t really choose the time and day when you lose your keys. But if you need a locksmith for non-emergency tasks such as making spare copies of your keys, perhaps you should call then on a weekday during normal working hours.

The Location of the Customer

It also doesn’t add to the cost when you come into the locksmith’s shop to get keys made for your home or your car. But it’s a different matter when you need the locksmith to come to you. Some locksmiths offer a minimum fee for mobile services, and then tack on additional charges depending on where you are. It can be more expensive if you’re very far from the locksmith office, or if the traffic in the area is so bad that it takes a long time to get there.

The cost of the locksmith service may also depend on whether you’re at home or out on the road. In some cases, you may have to even pay for the parking of the locksmith’s car.

The Complexity of the Job

Simple jobs usually don’t cost as much as more complicated jobs. But some jobs are not as simple as you might think.

For example, let’s say you were locked out from your home and you called a locksmith to help you get in and put in new locks. Some services may then charge you a service fee, bill you to break into the home which requires drilling the lock, another charge may cover uninstalling the old lock, and then another charge will be for installing the new lock into place. You also have to pay for the new lock as well.

In some cases, the locksmith’s charges for uninstalling and installing locks depend on the locks involved. Some locks may be more difficult to uninstall or install, and as a consequence the charges may be greater for the services.  Usually, if the locks offer higher security, then they may cost more to open as a result.

Key duplication can also range from simple to very complex, and the cost for the work can vary according to the complexity. When a transponder key needs to be duplicated, then the price is greater compared to what you pay when you have your padlock keys duplicated.

The Time Needed to Complete the Job

In some situations, the locksmith will also consider the time needed to complete a job. If it takes longer, then it may be more expensive. Sometimes this will also factor in the time needed for the locksmith to get to where you are.

The time needed to complete the job may be prolonged, due to the complexity of the case. But sometimes even a simple job can take a long time. For example removing old locks in the doors and putting in new ones around a home may not be terribly difficult. But because of the number of rooms in the home, the charges may be substantial in total. Usually, there’s a service charge as well as an hourly rate.

The Use of Sophisticated Equipment

When you call a locksmith for their service, you’re not just paying for labor. In some cases, you’re also paying for new equipment. For example, you may have called a locksmith to install new locks in your home or vehicle. The locksmith already has the new locks ready, but you may have to pay more for them than if you get the new locks online. That’s because you don’t have to wait. And of course, you pay more when you want to get the latest locks with all the security features.

Some jobs also require the use of more sophisticated machinery. When the locksmith needs more complicated machinery to complete the job, the price is usually greater as a result.
